Control of zoo pond solids

MICROCAT®-AL Pond and Lake Cleaner was added to rapidly clean the pond in anticipation of the zoo’s 150th anniversary celebration.

Objective

To clean the pond of solids rapidly in anticipation of planned visit by dignitaries for the 150th anniversary celebration for the zoo.

Program

The solids were examined to ascertain their nature. Test kits were used to determine the water chemistry. MICROCAT® – AL Pond and Lake Cleaner was applied as follows:

• Day 1: 2.2 kg
• Day 2: 2.2 kg
• Day 15: 1.1 kg

Preventive application 650 grams/day on sunny days.

Water Chemistry Test Results

Initial Ammonia nitrogen – 2 mg/l (approximate)
Initial Nitrate – 44 mg/l
Initial Phosphate – < 1 mg/l

Results

By day 15 of the MICROCAT® application program, the solids in the pond had disappeared from the surface of the pond and the water was clear.

Conclusions

MICROCAT® – AL Pond and Lake Cleaner rapidly clarified the pond of surface and suspended solids in preparation for the anniversary celebration at the zoo. The product was easy to apply and economical, compared to the alternative treatments.
